GardeningHere in New Zealand we are blessed with a great climate and most of us have a little piece of land we could turn into our own food larder with just a little bit of effort. It doesn’t have to be fancy, I know some people who grow potatoes in old car tyres and you don’t have to have huge amounts of land. My old neighbour use to grow everything on her balcony in pots, her courgettes were way better than mine too! Even if you only try first with a few herbs on the window sill you’ll be surprised at how much better your food will taste when adding them in freshly picked.

So why you should have a go at growing your own veggies!! Well cost for one! Boy those supermarkets sure know how to charge; what a rip off! Freshness is another reason, the moment you pick produce is the moment it starts losing its nutrient value. So not only will it taste better it will be a lot more nutrient rich than those that have been sitting in a chiller for days! You only take what is needed and therefore cut down on waste. Another reason is it can be great exercise turning over the soil and almost relaxing weeding around your growing plants. But above all its incredible satisfying eating something you’ve grown yourself. So give it ago you never know, you may just find yourself hooked and running to the library for garden books.

Here’s a few of the easiest I’ve found to grow that are highly nutritious; kale, native spinach, Jerusalem artichokes, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, silver beet, beetroot, peppers, butternut squash, courgettes, pea’s, green beans. But don’t just take my word for it, give it a go I’m sure you’ll really taste the difference too. Happy growing!
